...do they combine both pages power together or does one page just replace the other?
Hi,

When we use 301 redirect, we actually divert our web traffic from one page to another. 301 redirects are use when you are moving on page to another or you are changing the urls of the page. User do not even know that the old page is ever deleted or redirected.

The best part of 301 redirect is that it passes between 90-99% of link juice of old page to the redirected page.

For more information you can have a look on below article published at MOZ [URLnf="https://moz.com/learn/seo/redirection"]here[/URLnf].

When you use a 301 redirect, the second page basically replaces the first. You will get all the SEO benefits of both pages concentrated in one page.
301s are used in various scenarios like changing domain name, redirecting from www to non www pages or when a page is deleted and you want users to be redirected to a new page.

301 redirect also called permanent redirect is a useful technique which pass the link juice from one page to another page. It is best suited when a website is re designed with new urls or a page is deleted and then redirecting the deleted to page to a newly created page so the link juice won't waste.

It is important to remember that changing even the smallest aspect of a pages URL structure could cause said page to drop out of the search results entirely, which is why a 301 redirect is essential in maintaining the traffic/rankings that page may have been generating prior to the change in it’s URL structure. However, 301 redirects can be used in a multitude of other scenarios, including:

1. Moving to a new domain
2. Cleaning up dynamic URLs and redirecting them to shorter search engine friendly versions
3. Preventing duplicate content problems caused by www and non-www versions of your pages, along with other common causes of duplicate content

Pretty much this.

But keep in mind, that it is not always the best to Redirect.

If you run a shop and you are going to delete a product you will never get back in stock its sometimes best to just go and let it run 404 since google not always likes when a Search Request is being answered with something you didnt initially searched for.
