Microsoft says that Windows 10 will be its final release of the iconic operating system that's installed on over 90% of computers.
"Right now we're releasing Windows 10, and because Windows 10 is the last version of Windows, we're all still working on Windows 10," said Jerry Nixon, Microsoft's developer evangelist, at the Ignite tech conference.

Instead of releasing an entirely new and different version of its desktop OS every few years, Microsoft is taking an Apple-like approach to subsequent Windows releases, standardizing on Windows 10 as its Cupertino-based rival has done with OS X. Under this new strategy, Microsoft will deliver regular improvements to Windows through software updates.
So, is this a good thing, or a bad thing? i for one think its a great idea, i am a windows 10 user, and love it!

thoughts?

I think they should have done this back with Windows XP. Everyone in the business world became proficient with using Windows XP. Every windows release since then has been inferior in some way.

They should have move to the software as a service model back then in my opinion.

I am not so sure they won't be releasing new versions of Windows. They will be. They will just call them an update so that they can force everyone to install the new "update" which will change the way Windows looks and works and therefore be just as if they had installed a new version of Windows.

Time will tell.

looking at it, they are just going to push everything through "updates" so perhaps a new "shell" will come down, but i dont think there will be any new "operating systems" (as such) but who knows, we will soon find out im sure.

i couldnt agree more, they should have stopped with xp.

In the last article in May 8, 2015, Microsoft has confirmed about this and Windows 10 is the final version of Microsoft Windows. There is no next generation!

In fact, Microsoft will not release any new version of Windows with specific name. But they will working to update Windows 10 like major update with bundle of features ... or something like that.

While this is very true, surely they make there money from people going out to physically pay for a new operating system, so what now, they will just charge us to get certain updates?

they obviously know what they are doing, it would be nice to know a little more, does anybody have any more information on this?

That's just the worse ideea that they could have . Their competitors will get ahead of them by launching new OS's and will loose a lot of costumers that way . The ads would be another issue too and also they have big problems at the privacy chapter . It's just a shame!
