Cloud hosting is designed to optimize speed and availability for the clients. It eliminates common downtime factors such as hardware failures as it is not reliant on any single piece of hardware.

From a providers POV cloud hosting is easier to upgrade in terms of software and resources on the underlying platform and also on user accounts. It also means we are able to host more clients on a single platform which make it cost effective for us.

From a clients POV cloud hosting should be something to consider, it will improve the performance of your website/hosted applications and also decrease downtime.

Cloud Hosting Providers are using clusters or servers to host websites or virtual servers. That mean if a server fail, there is no downtime because they have the ability to move your virtual server on the fly.
With a replication on the storage, it's the best solution to have high-availability.

But Hostgator is not a cloud hosting provider at all. Most of Cloud Hosting Providers offer hourly billing, and the ability to scale quickly your infrastructure.
Some Cloud Hosting Providers : Linode, DigitalOcean, Vultr, AWS , Google

Linode, DigitalOcean and Vultr are not true cloud providers.
There is a lot of confusion in what a true cloud is - those providers just offer hourly billing on a VPS.

A true cloud provider would cost more than $5-$10/mo.

What do you mean ? With a cloud infrastructure (OpenStack or Cloudstack) with fault-tolerance storage, instant-resizing and snapshot/cloning features, I think we can talk about true cloud hosting. A classic VPS platform doesn't allow to resize servers without downtime.

Thank you. How do you feel about Microsoft Azure? Cloud hosting sounds like something I want. I always thought "cloud hosting" was regular hosting since clouds are just servers anyway. But I see your point about clustering them together.

Microsoft Azure, Google Compute Cloud or AWS are Cloud Hosting Providers. High-availability, good performances and total scalability.
But both of them are really expensive.

For web hosting, if you don't need advanced solution to handle high-traffic, you should never need to pay for this level of service.
But the word "Cloud" is a real problem at the moment, because a good VPS provider will use clusters of servers to provide high-availability service,
but may not use the word "Cloud" to sell it.
When some others like Hostgator will use Cloud to talk about an old server with hard drives :ranting_w:

Cloud hosting allows an unlimited number of machines to act as one system and other hosting solutions (VPS or dedicated) depend on one machine only, while cloud hosting security is guaranteed by many servers.

It is still a ways out before cloud hosting will be the go to option starting out.

Sorry if you've seen me say the same thing in other forums but this is something that has to be said. Cloud Services & Cloud Hosting are NOT the same thing

Cloud Hosting = Shared Hosting. Both services you receive run on shared resources.

Some would say no, cloud is supposed to be clustered unlike Shared hosting. Well, if you are running shared hosting without clustering to begin with, then it is not really professional hosting, is it? It is highly irresponsible to not cluster your shared hosting environment.

Unless you have customized versions of cPanel running like we do, every provider that offers cPanel is running on a single server. cPanel does not support full system clustering as of today. Any provider whether cloud or shared, if the control panel is cPanel, you are essentially on a single server, period. They might have multiple servers but your account will always remain on one server. Unless of course they have a custom clustered cPanel.

Now then you would ask what is cloud then? Well, just because you are on a single server does not mean there is no backend redundancy built in. That's the idea of cloud compared to physical machines is that whatever setup you have, there is different levels of redundancy built in so that even if something fails you either have a fail-over component available or you can recover quickly from your earlier snapshots/backups.

If I may elaborate on our own setup a bit. We are completely built on top of AWS, so technically even if we did nothing additional, by definition the service is already "cloud" enabled. However, unlike a regular setup, what is different is that components are separated as much as possible. So, there is load balancers before the main server, the DB is separate from the web server, the HDD is obviously outside the main server hardware etc. So, as you can see, at this time we can claim to be cloud hosting because almost every component of the server is independent of each other and even if something fails, there is always redundancy that can quickly step in to save the day.

So again, there is really no difference in the type of service you get, they are still the same cPanel hosting accounts with the same type of disk & bandwidth / cpu & memory limitations. What is different is the underlying setup. Although shared hosters are also supposed to have clustering and multiple levels of redundancy built in, unfortunately most of them are setup on a single server with disk, DB, DNS, routing everything running out of a single box unlike the cloud where components are distributed.

Coming to cloud services like the ones AWS, Azure, DO offer, they are offering you resources on the cloud. It is up to you how you use them. If you're just using a single machine with a built in ephemeral storage and no redundancy, then you basically have undone cloud from what those providers have offered you. So, cloud as a service gives you limitless possibilities of highly available redundant architectures to ensure zero downtime, but when you combine them to run a service, if you don't do them the cloud way, it will just turn out to be your regular setup.

Tried looking for some answersd too. It says that traditional hosting is connected to a physical server while cloud is hosted on a virtual partition.

Like everything else, cloud hosting too has its pros and cons. While the technology can attest to be a great advantage to your company, it could also cause harm if not understood and used correctly.
There are many benefits to adding a server to a cloud for small business network.

  • File and Network security
  • Increased reliability
  • Centralized data storage and shared resources
  • Virus Management
  • Centralized Backup

Cloud hosting service made up of many interconnected servers working together. As the website running on cloud server is served by many servers, thus the chance of breakdown of service is decreased and this proves to be another great advantage for business running on the web. That is why many social media platforms like facebook, google+, linkedin, twitter and many others used by users world-wide uses cloud server hosting. And cloud server hosting is the reason behind why these website do not loses their connection or get slows down even if these are accessed by millions of users simultaneously.

A cloud server gives the business user stability and security because any software problems are isolated from your environment. Other cloud servers won't impact on your cloud server and vice versa. If another user overloads their cloud server, this will have no impact on your cloud server, unlike with physical servers.

The high availability with scalable featured services is somehow a hot topic in this hosting industry. What will happen a single application or web app down for a couple of seconds? Yes, definitely the business will steal by the competitors, and loss will be millions. So every hosting provider is now moving towards the cloud methods to optimize the speed and higher availability with higher scalability. Enterprise business owners are opting for only cloud versions of hosting because some of them are promising the cost of the service will only for the particular usage.

The larger pool of hardware can be allocated by splitting 2 core 3 core CPU or 1GB, 2 GB, 3gb RAM as same as the Amazone and GCP. Also, we can say it is an upgraded version of the shared environment.

It is suitable for those who manage business websites and those who got a spike on traffic on several occasions. So you can opt for these if your business needs scalability on demand and better speed with no or lesser downtime.

In cloud hosting, servers are remotely stored and managed. This benefits a business by having increased scalability and reliability. The company will only pay for the resources it needs, making it more cost effective than traditional hosting services. In addition, cloud-based data is safely stored across multiple servers, so if one server falls, it can quickly be retrieved.

Cloud hosting is accessible on a network instead of on a single server, which makes it more flexible and scalable. This type of hosting also integrates cloud resources to keep your application or website running and available at all times.

As any software issues are isolated from your environment, a cloud server offers reliability and security to corporate users. Your cloud server won't be impacted by other cloud servers, and the opposite is true. Contrary to physical servers, your cloud services won't be affected if another user overloads theirs.

With a cloud, your data are replicated in the cloud so if a piece of hardware is breaking then you will not loose your data.
