Exit rate is the percentage of surfers that left your site on a specific page. The last page they viewed before leaving.

If you have a high exit rate on a specific page you need to take a look at it and see if it makes sense for them to leave at that page or if the page needs some work.

If you have an article that spans over multiple pages... Let's say 5 for this example and you have a high exit rate on page 2... You need to figure out why you are losing the surfers interest at that point.

To really understand exit rate, do a search on your favorite search engine for bounce rate vs exit rate.

Great explanation by Rob. This is particularly important if you're running an eCommerce site. If you're attempting to increase conversion rates, it would be good to know if there is a trend attributing to cart abandonment.

Exit Rate - Bounce rate is a percentage of Google Analytics to each page on a site, represents the percentage of people who escaped from the website pages. Thus, when a user accesses a website and move back and forth between pages on the site, then, exit the page after reading a certain article, the user exits on the page containing the article will increase by 1, the other pages on your site bounce rate remained unchanged.

Suppose, for 3 days, a visitor to the site in order abc.com as follows:
Day 1:

mainsite (pageview =1, exits = 0) -> siteA (pageview =1, exits = 0) -> siteB (pageview =1, exits = 1)
Day 2:
mainsite (pageview =2, exits = 0) -> siteA (pageview =2, exits = 1) -> siteB (pageview =2, exits = 1)

Day 3:
mainsite (pageview =3, exits = 0) -> siteA (pageview =3, exits = 1) -> siteB (pageview =3, exits = 2)

Thus, the bounce rate of the page on the site will be:
mainsite: Exit Rate = 0%
siteA: Exit Rate = 33,33%
siteB: Exit Rate = 66,66%
website: Exit Rate = 33,33%

A bounce occurs when a web site visitor only views a single page on a website, that is, the visitor leaves a site without visiting any other pages before a specified session-timeout occurs. There is no industry standard minimum or maximum time by which a visitor must leave in order for a bounce to occur. Rather, this is determined by the session timeout of the analytics tracking software.

where

Rb = Bounce rate
Tv = Total number of visitors viewing one page only
Te = Total entries to page[2]
A visitor may bounce by:

Clicking on a link to a page on a different web site
Closing an open window or tab
Typing a new URL
Clicking the "Back" button to leave the site
Session timeout[2]
There are two exceptions:
1) You have a one-page website
2) Your offline value proposition is so compelling that people would see just one single webpage and get all the information they need and leave.
