Yahoo and spam?

So I have done a bit of digging around and not only just through e-mails, but general usage of the site has seemingly been associated with spam, spammers, fishing scams, and the like. When exactly did Yahoo get such a bad rep? I know when I do get spam/junk e-mails that make it to my inbox, 9 times out of 10 they are from Yahoo accounts. I remember Yahoo being such a credible site and e-mailing service to use and now it is seemingly lumped in with trash dump sites online.
