Check for competition?

The battle for SEO is not a single-player game, but rather an MMO game. You can look at and deploy all the SEO techniques you can come up with, but there's one enemy that will always loom up and bring you under its shadow: competition.
Every niche has multiple competitors, even single keywords do. And obviously, the more popular they are, the more pressing competition will be. You need to keep a wary eye on it if you want to succeed...

... but how, exactly? What are the best tools to check for competitors in similar niches? Or do you do some manual research on Google/social networks? Share your tips and tricks.

First, Perform a search with Google about your target keywords and make a list of the sites/companies that pop high in the search results. You can consider these to be your main competitors. Then, Visit Your Competitors' Sites and Analyze Them with the tools like ahrefs or semrush... Actually, you only ask that :icon_e_geek:

Do you think it's better to check for multiple keywords or just the main one? Focusing resource management on a single target can be easier, but I don't want it to be ineffective.
I looked up both tools, but it seems they're both paid programs (even though they offer free demos). Are there any free alternatives?

Some more places are SEO SpyGlass, Majestic, and Moz. Of course, Moz is famous for DA and PA, and also they have Moz Rank. Now, Majestic, on the other hand, has the two metrics Trust and Citation Flow.

Anyway, note that these tools have free and paid parts to their services, depending on how much power you want.

I am using Semrush from last 2 years, that is where we can manually check and insert our competitor's keywords and ranking. Otherwise, you can find out various free tools in Google search results.
You can also manually search your competitors by searching your targeted keywords in Google.

When you search for a keyword, google will return you search results. You grab the link of the top page and use ahrefs (dot) com to check the opponent. You must have more quality backlink than your opponent.
