Google hates paid links. Nonetheless, it seems like guest posting is a legal way to get paid links (much like directories are). In fact, guest posting is the new link buying market. Anyway, though, am I missing something? Guest positng couldn't really be paid links, otherwise, Google would get wise to it and punish it. If they didn't then money would take precedence over quality, right? However, though, it does seem like it takes money to buy content, so that argument is sort of irrelevant.

Google does not hate paid links. Much of the internet is made up of paid links.

What Google hates are link schemes for the purpose of manipulating PageRank.

It really isn't as bad as you think, paid links are pretty fine.
If they didn't then money would take precedence over quality, right?
That's not quite correct statement, because if you would buy links you would aim for quality ones anyway. So technically yes, if you got good budget you will get quality links.

Google point оut that not еvеrу paid link іѕ a bad tһіng, specifically:

Nоt all paid links vіоlаtе our guіԁеlіnеѕ. Buying and ѕеllіng links is а normal part оf the economy оf the web wһеn done for аԁvеrtіѕіng purposes, and nоt for manipulation оf search results. Links рurсһаѕеԁ for аԁvеrtіѕіng should be ԁеѕіgnаtеԁ as such. Тһіѕ can be ԁоnе in several wауѕ, such as:

Adding a rеl=”nofollow” attribute to tһе <a> tag

Rеԁіrесtіng the links tо an intermediate раgе that is blосkеԁ from search engines wіtһ a rоbоtѕ.tхt file

No, Google doesn't hate paid links. It just wants people to use No Follow attribute to denote paid links.
That's it. Also, Yes, Guest posting happens only when there is a transaction between host and guest post blogger.
It may not be true always.

Guest posting is one way or other paid link only. Most of the authority websites sell links in the name of Guest Post. Google may restrict those do follow guest post links.

Guest Posting and Paid Links still work up to these days. As long as you do it in moderation and not leaving any patterns for Google to see, then I can say that these 2 link building techniques is as good as it gets.
