Cleaning up your dead links

If you've had a website for any amount of time you know that backlinks die, pages can change, categories, etc but what do you do to clean up your 404 pages, backlinks that lead nowhere, etc? Do you just wait for Google analytics to show your 404 errors?

You can wait and hope, or act on it and be sure.Broken links and dead websites probably will not hurt your website, but it is always better to be proactive and check on a regular basis.
The tools that can help you find bad backlinks can also help you disavow them. Among others, I would recommend:

Monitor Backlinks
SEO Spyglass
CognitiveSEO Backlink Analysis.
