Search engine marketing (SEM), is a form of Internet marketing that seeks to promote websites by increasing their visibility in search engine result pages (SERPs) through the use of paid placement, contextual advertising, and paid inclusion. The industry peak body Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization (SEMPO), includes search engine optimization (SEO) within its reporting, and SEO is also included in the industry definitions of SEM by Forrester Research, eMarketer, Search Engine Watch, and industry expert Danny Sullivan. The New York Times defines SEM as 'the practice of buying paid search listings'.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume or quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via "natural" ("organic" or "algorithmic") search results. Typically, the earlier a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine. SEO may target different kinds of search, including image search, local search, and industry-specific vertical search engines. This gives a web site web presence.

1) SEO aims to provide better organic search results while SEM uses the search engines to advertise your website or business to Internet customers and send a more targeted traffic to your Web site.

2)The goal of successful SEO is to obtain a high-ranking placement in the search results page of a search engine (e.g. Google, Bing, Yahoo and other search engines) while SEM offers you the opportunity to pay based on clicks (you pay only for each click through from the advertisement to your Web site).

3)SEM is in the amount of control the advertiser has. With SEM, you get to pick which of your site’s pages show up for which keywords, and where on the SERP they’ll rank. With SEO, those choices are up to the search engine

SEM - Search Engine Marketing
SEO - Search Engine Optimiation

SEO is a part of SEM. SEM is the combination of organic seo and paid seo. Organic SEO means optimizing our website with the factors like keyword, banklinks, title tag, internal link, alt tag and lot more, according to search engine algorithm to rank higher. While Paid SEO means using paid Ads, we can get high rank in search results.

Hope this explanations gave you a basic knowledge of SEM and SEO.

SEM stands for search engine marketing, basically it involves using money in the process like paid adds etc
SEO stands for search engine optimization and this does not involve the use of money basically you use free techniques to make the site rank high. But I find seo as another brunch of SEM because also it is after search engine marketing though in different way.

Search Engine Optimization is to have great content, a good amount of quality back links, and On-Site optimization that search engine crawlers.

Search Engine Marketing is that sole purpose is to gain a higher visibility on search engine, whether this is via organic and paid traffic.

Here is some useful information :)

Great advice from SEOmoz, which I would like to share with you:

Semantically related keywords
You optimize your content for specific keywords. Apart from those main keywords, your text should also contain words, which are semantically related with your main keywords. This is something the Google bot is looking for. For example: the word cat relates to tiger, cat food, pet.
Section analysis
The Google bot analyses the sections on your page. Your main text, your side bar, the link sections, the footer. It is easy to see that not all sections are related to the main topic of the page. Still, you should keep your main text closely related to the title of your page. It is good to have semantically related keywords in the paragraph, but try to stick to your main theme, for otherwise you can end up ranking for tiger, instead of cat.
Linking out to quality content
Google claim they take into consideration the outbound links from your pages. If you link out to quality sites, this is a good sign for them. The New York Times followed this advice and they say it really lead to higher rankings in Google.
The outgoing links are also a good way to get into other people stat reports as referring sites. This may get them link to some of your articles as well. Linking out to quality content is a good link-building tactics.
Make visitors happy
Google have many ways to gather data how users react on your site. They have Google Chrome (their browser is already used by 25% of the webbers), Google toolbar, free Google Wi-Fi, they have relations with ISPs. These means allow them to see how many time visitors stay on your site, do they browse other pages, do they return to your pages, which equals to the way they like your site. If users like your site, Google will see it, so invest it that.
Quality content
The quality of your content is the best way to make your visitors happy. So, make sure your content is:
grammatically correct;
unique – it is a bad idea to have a template content and change 5 words on each page;
attractive to your users by including images and video;
made more interesting with user generated content. (Read more about High-quality content guidelines after Google Panda)

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is targeted to elevate the ranking of a site in organic results. SEM (Search Engine Marketing) on the other hand, uses advertising to increase the visitor's traffic to the site. On typing a keyword in the search query, the ads and sponsored links displayed are a result of SEM while the rest of result page with organic results is due to SEO.
