How to minimize 404 error from my website?

I have recently got a warning from Google about the increasing 404 page in my website. Can anyone please suggest any tool so that i can detect all such errors ?

I'm using 301 redirect with htaccess to move to new urls and 404 errors in my Google webmaster tool decreased a lot.
I would like to know some new solutions for decreasing 404 errors in GWT . Anyone else?

Tommy is right. Use 301 to that 404 pages.

I am also using the same strategy for 404 errors. But I think we also delete those 404 pages which are showing in GWT, isn't it ?

Yes, Add 301 Redirect Code to your website, to remove 404 error.

404 error is generated when page is not found in the website. When you changes in url, 404 error is generated. When Google crawling your website, it is not found some page in site, then it gives 404 error message. 404 errors are shown in Google webmaster tools under Crawl Errors.

1. Submit your website in Google webmaster tools, after that "crawl errors" contains list of urls that Google not find. That is soft 404 urls.Take this url, paste in Google, find it cache or not. If it cache, give "remove URL" request from GWT.

2. Check out broken links in your website, solves it.

In GWT .. I get 404 error mainly from my sitemaps, I didn't quite understand that. So I deleted my current sitemap and uploaded it once more. Waiting for Google to update those error again.

I think you need to use 301 Redirection for this type of pages.

Redirect those 404 error pages by 301 redirect (permanent move) using htaccess file. Upload it.
Go to webmaster tool and open those 404 error page. Now click on fetch as google.
Those URL automatically redirect and generate message as a following.
Now click on mark as fixed.
