It depends on your targeted customers geographic location and the type of business you are running. Since you are considering PayPal, I'd say to go with them as they are widely used and reputed.

If you want to make the right choice first of all you need to analyze the needs and the capabilities of your business. And there are some more factors you need to consider but for two above mentioned: geographical location of customers and the type of business.

These factors are the location of your business, your processing volume, prior processing history, some specific requirements of your business, for instance, the ability to accept multi-currency or micro transaction. These are just some points and the list can be extended further.

Also, I can share with you one informational resource called #Paylosophy where you can find the articles describing different issues of payment processing industry or if you do not manage to find the answer to the question you are interested in in one of the articles, you can ask a question there.

You are just starting so I can assume that the processing volume is not expected to be very high, so a service like PayPal or its alternative is probably going to be the best option. You have already been provided with a lot of PayPal alternatives but you also can have a look at Skrill, Braintree and Payoneer.

I have been dealing with a few alternatives and Paypal is really the best.
First of all, its universal. Second, their support. Third, its best :)
But I can also recommend you online payments through digital invoices. I have been using Lyrik.nu as provides different packages. They're Swedish (and so am I) but if I am not wrong they serve international customers as well. Contact them and see.

EDIT: Dugh, I cant post links in this section obviously

I have only used Paypal so can't really judge the others, but I've had no troubles so far. I think like others say it may depend on if you are dealing mainly with other countries or not. Check out each of the names you have heard and read up on them and select what works best for your situation.

The key I would think would be what are your customers going to be comfortable using as well. In some cases they may not know the end player, just that they can use a credit card. In the case of Paypal if that option is available and the customer that has Paypal they will usually go that route. I know I do when shopping online.

Many Payment gateways are there which can help you to make your transaction hassle free. few of them are CCAvenue, PayU, PayUMoney etc. These offer the best services to their clients to make their transaction safe and secure to gain the trust of their customers in an easier way.

It really depends on the country you live in and the products you are selling. For example in the UK it's almost only credit cards and paypal. But in france a lot of people still want to pay with check.

These are rather payment gateways/processor you are referring to, not payment methods. It really depends on your audience, the main local ones are below

- Brazil: local cards + installments; Boleto Bancario
- Spanis LATAM: cash payments
- Germany: ELV (Direct Debit); Klarna
- Nordics: Klarna
- Western Europe: Wire Transfer
- Russia: Sberbank; SMS payments; Yandex
- Japan: Konbini
- China: Alipay
- etc.

Can't agree with Check in France - that is really minor nowadays.
