and what things need to consider before purchasing a dedicated server?

thanks everyone!

If not familiar to manage a dedicated server, you will be able to select managed dedicated server, this way a company will manage it for you.

When you selecting/comparing a dedicated server look at the following:
1) Location / How fast speed of network
2) Server Specification (CPU speed / HDD size/ RAID / RAM )
3) How fast or efficient support
3) Managed or Unmanaged
4) Price

First of all, consider why you're looking into a dedicated server. It'd help to know the reason as to why you'll need one, to help you decide what to look for.
Either way, if you've got no experience managing one, you'll either wish to get a managed service, or an unmanaged one and hire a server administrator to set it up, lock it down and configure it to your needs. Keep in mind that the latter option is not a one-off fee, as you'll need regular maintenance.

You'll further more need to gather how much resources you require for whatever your project is, and scale your server after that (optionally with a bit of overhead). Placement of the server will also be important, and should reflect your target demographic.

Finally, you need to decide whether or not you wish to lease a server, or purchase one and co-locate it in a datacenter. The latter is cheaper in the long run, but the former greatly widens your options and is much cheaper to set up.

Best of luck!

To complete what has been said above, yes, it's more difficult and specially technical to choose a server rather than a shared hosting plan.

Except if you have a very demanding site (lots of visitors, needs more ressources than you can get from a shared hosting account), you should stick to the shared hosting.

Between the shared hosting and the dedicated server there is the VPS. It's still cheaper than the dedicated and offer more freedom than the regular shared hosting account.

A traditional shared account is a few dollars per month, a dedicated server will cost you at least $100 per month for a simple one. Are you sure you will be able to recover your investment with your site(s)?
