If you don't want to use Google fetch tool then building some backlinks like SEOPub and Cristy94 suggested are quite exact. Because spiders of Google will follow backlinks to your site and crawling your webpages from there.

You are right, it depends on the website owners which they want to set www or non-www. For me, if the domain is short, it should be shorter with non-www on the url, that makes urls look cleaner.
