Some WordPress users are using BuddyPress for a social community where members can create an account and take part in many activities. I have used Buddy Press in the past and have to say it's pretty good for users who want easy of access. Buddy Pres is a powerful add on that allows your website to expand and becoming a small social community. If your thinking about creating your own social site I would recommend using buddy press.

I like buddypress the new version that works on any theme. It is amazing how it can transform your website to a socail platform. We used it as a intranet system in our companey and it works great!
