Hi to everyone. A friend sent me this question below and i will love to get more ideas on the subject matter.

"I have had a couple discussions with some friends about the "non-necessity" of a Plesk or cPanel to manage a VPS Server operating on Windows OS Server. They keep insisting on the fact that it is needed because they code on .NET. Would appreciate if more information could be brought to light on this and the possibility of managing the server without a cPanel."

Your thoughts will be appreciate

Plesk is a great control panel. It got some bad reviews from previous versions, but Plesk 11 & 12 are much improved.

Plesk is simply a control panel. It does not make .Net applications work, it simply makes it possible to have multiple customer accounts and a lot easier to manage the server. I would recommend using Plesk or another control panel, but it is not necessary to have a control panel, just to host a .net website.

I appreciate your answer. But however, i still will love to know what will be an option to managing the server considering from your answer, a cPanel isn't necessary?

Without a control panel, you would add your website to IIS and create your databases in SQL Server directly. Install and configure MailEnable or other mail server. Setup DNS and ftp, etc, etc.

If i get you right, adding your server to IIS and creating your own database in SQL Server directly and every other setup is done by the client ain't it? Unless the provider/seller of the Server offers to provide guidance where the client has difficulty attaining results? Thanks in advance for your response and any other..

Typically, yes.

If you have a managed server, then your host would help with some things, but they will usually not go as far as setting up every database for you, etc. Your managed support would/should get IIS/SQL/DNS/FTP/etc setup and configured for you, but it would be up to you to add and make changes to databases and websites as needed. However this is something to ask and workout with your host.
