Honestly Google Search Console is still the most underrated one. Everyone chases shiny paid tools but the query and page data in GSC is straight from the source and free. The trick is actually digging into the filters - comparing date ranges, looking at queries where you sit on page 2, and spotting pages that lost impressions. Since GSC is taken, the one I would put next is Bing Webmaster Tools. The backlink report is free and it will show you links Search Console never surfaces, because GSC only shows a sample and will not give you a competitor's profile at all.

Screaming Frog's free tier is the other one, five hundred URLs is enough to audit most small sites end to end. Neither is a hidden gem exactly, people just install them once and never open them again.
