When should a no-traffic domain be renewed?

Some domains have no traffic and no offers, but still feel useful.

Maybe the keyword is good, maybe the niche is growing, maybe it fits a future site.

How do you decide whether to renew or drop a domain like that?

I renew a domain for as long as it continues to pay it's "rent", but if it has no usefulness after 2 years then I drop it.

I would renew it only if the domain has strong keywords, good branding potential, or a clear future use. If there is no traffic, no offers, and no realistic plan for using it, I would probably drop it.

The rent test works, but it hides one distinction that matters for resale. A hand registered name with no traffic is worth the renewal fee to the next buyer, which is to say nothing. A name that once had a real site on it and still has referring domains pointing at it is a different asset entirely, and those two look identical sitting in a renewal list.

Before dropping one I point it at a live site for a month or two and read the raw server logs. Type in traffic and old inbound links show up there even when every keyword tool reports zero. Has anyone found a quicker way to check that without parking it somewhere first?
