Hi Kal,

If you read G's terms and conditions - then its clear that if you intentionally create a backlink with the aim of increasing your rankings on the SERPs then its all blackhat or a shade of grey depending on who you talk to you... For me I don't necessarily think on the lines of white hat, black hat... Its best described as which is least risky to most risky i.e.

Least risky - Guest articles on private blogs
Medium Risk - Create tier one sites, add content and over time backlink.... Also applies to PBNs.
High Risk - Use tools like GSA, SENuke, Xrumer - create a ton of backlinks etc

In the end your focus needs to be on how to stay under the radar with G's algo detecting unnatural link building... i.e. think about your anchor text, link profile, velocity of link creation, nofollow vs dofollow ratio etc....

For me if you are into gaming the serps - then its all blackhat I'm afraid - even with so called white hatters whom advocate creating links with the aim to game the serps.... True white hat is when you only create content on your site and hope that someone else will like it with social likes/shares or linking to it from their website... and I'm sure we'll all agree that whitehat under this definition is a load of sh** - well it is in my opinion lol ;-)

Hope that helps!

Cheers,

Sid

White hat backlinking is doing everything according to Google's terms without breaking any of their rules. Black hat link building is violating Google's terms and trying to game the system. Then there's grey hat, which is being between good and bad, like my friend Elcidofaguy haha... I'm just kidding :DD:

My advise would be to forget about backlinks and focus on social media marketing and let the backlinks come organically (as people share your content online, they create backlinks for you, that's organic backlinks).

As long as you start to build backlinks to your website, it's no longer whitehat. :)
Google has always been stressing on natural, organic links.

Have you weighed out this question?

How long will my niche last?

You see, black hat thats not cleverly thought out NEVER lasts. Black hat that is carried in a sophisticated manner will last you until Google finds a way to nail you.

So determining how long your niche will last will give you a perspective on what type of SEO you should use.

Niche that lasts a couple years - BLACKHAT
Timeless niches - WHITEHAT

So is asking questions about white hat in your best interest?

You want white hat? Produce ALOT of content and share it EVERYWHERE. That's it. You'll begin to communicate with people in your niche over social networking and such, and take it from there. There really isn't a clear cut out path. More paths appear as you go and turn to multiple options that ultimately lead to the same destination.

In search engine optimization (SEO) terms, white hat SEO refers to the usage of optimization strategies, techniques and procedure that focus on a human audience opposed to search engines and completely follows search engine rules and policies.

For example, a website that is optimized for search engines yet focuses on relevancy and organic ranking is considered to be optimized using White Hat SEO practices. A few examples of White Hat SEO techniques include using keywords and keyword analysis, backlinking, link building to progress link attractiveness, and writing content for human readers.

White Hat SEO is more frequently used by those who intend to build a long-term investment on their website. Also called Ethical SEO.

There is all the time a good way or bad way of doing or implementing any method, same is with SEO techniques also. There are certain criteria, parameters and recommended trends which are followed internationally by SEO professionals and which are also adopted by all major search engines. The set of techniques which follow all these guidelines set by search engines are said to be White Hat SEO techniques.

The trouble comes when people starts misusing the White hat techniques in a way that it tends to spamming and over the time become black hat SEO or unaccepted search engine ranking technique. One of such misused white hat SEO technique now is back link building, and one of the form of blogging which is most affected due to back link building spamming is “Guest posting” and in the past “Article directory submission”.

In a way, Black hat procedure is forever used by SEO people to rank anything higher in short-term and one biggest disadvantage of black hat methods are, they dont last for long. Moreover, website using black-hat techniques are typically blacklisted by major search engines. Now, let’s look at some of the familiar Black Hat SEO methods being used today...:)

Thank You.
