Hi guys, Does anyone here has any experience launching a product which has lots of affiliates promoting the offer and got over 50k visitors in 1 hour? Or 500k visitors in 1 day?
Can a shared hosting accommodate the huge traffic in that short time period like that?

We have customers that receive that much traffic, and more, but not in a shared hosting account.....

For this amount of traffic, you will be better off with a strong VPS or a dedicated server.

A good and strong VPS or a dedicated server is needed for a site with huge traffic.

With 50,000 visitors per hour that's mean you will have average roughly 1,000 concurrent connections. It's a lot and you need a VPS with much CPU as well as RAM.

Your best bet would probably be to play it safe and get a Dedicated Server; that's quite a bit of traffic, and depending on how your website is built you would probably need some decent resources. The following configuration would probably do the trick;

Intel E3-1230v1 3.2GhZ Processor (4 Cores / 8 Threads)
8GB DDR3 ECC Certified Memory
256GB Solid State Drive
10TB Monthly Bandwidth (standard)

I would also recommend going with a provider that offers DDoS Protection in-house as an added layer. Beyond that, Apache + Varnish Cache will do you a lot of good, it is said that the combination when configured accurately can be up to 20% faster than Litespeed WebServer.

Like others have said you will strain your shared hosting with that many concurrent connections. but to be fair... If you are asking this question... what makes you think you will get that type of response? If you look now adays, most of the gurus who are doing launches use something like Kajabi and let them deal with the traffic, Lead pages, let them deal with the traffic, and checkout through third parties so they get to deal with it...

You definitely don't want to take this on with a Shared Hosting account. Go for a VPS and tweak it a bit (Linode is very good) or fork out for a dedicated server somewhere. This very much depends on your budget.
Also if you're running apache, turn off KeepAlive, that will save you loads already.
At Statvoo.com we have many of sites/customers that get that much traffic, and we have to track all of their traffic, so we have seriously high loads of around a million concurrent connections at any one time.
