Google doesn't like it because they see it as a way that people are playing the system, especially since links are used in it's ranking factors. They see it as buying your way to the top of the rankings, instead of earning it by providing great content that is useful/helpful/valuable to site visitors.

Ult. is correct. Google's whole ranking algorithm is all about providing the end user with the best usr experience by finding the best content based on search. When you buy links, it's like you're cheating. If everyone did this and the users started to turn away from Google to another search engine, it could really hurt Google's bottom line because the search engine would lose credibility. As technology evolves, there will only be more and more options available, which would make it tougher for Google to hang on to its market share.

Google will know its paid links when a new site that was launched weeks ago, gets hundreds of links all the sudden. Also, if all the links have the same title/description.

There other factors that help Google spider determine if the links are unnatural.

That is completely untrue. Google has no idea what kind of advertising a website might be doing. What if I dropped a ton of money into radio, TV, and print advertising? What if I had a massive army of workers on the phones reaching out in the market to get word out about my new site?

It is NOT unnatural for a new site to launch and suddenly get tons of links pointing to it.

Same with the title description thing. What if a piece of content linking to the site goes viral? They are all going to have the same title and description linking back to the page.

A little common sense in SEO goes a long way. The problem with common sense though is that it is not all that common.

Google doesn't like paid back links just because google thinks you are doing wrong with your site. Your site doesn't have quality contents and something worthy on it. If your site has good and quality content, your site has innovation and creativity then you doesn't need to get paid backinks. Just do good quality work for your site. For example, Lamborghini/Rolls Royce/etc. don't need more to advertise for his car model. Just because we all know the features and luxury. But Renalut, Suzuki, Toyota, etc. need advertisement for their car model. Why? They also have quality and luxury but Why they need to promote? If you have answer then you can easily find out why google hates paid link building.

I am actually selling links my self so I can really break it down for you.

When ever I am in your position and I am confused about how Google would think, I always try to think with logic. Everytime I have done this I have been proven right because Google will do what is most logical.

Links are such an important part of the internet and how search engines collect information so they are not going anywhere. Websites like Mashable, TechCrunch, etc... are always linking to thousands of websites.

You need to understand that you can link to who ever you want but google has become very smart in determining if the link is legit or not.

If I have an article about cats and somewhere on this page there is 10 links to a porn site.... google knows that is not legit.

However if I have the same cat related article and 10 links to cat/animal related services google knows that is legit.

In 2015 (almost 2016) you can't trick google with fake links. The new wave of SEO boosting is basically buying blog posts about your business on high authority websites like mine.

If you have any more questions, feel free to PM me.

They don't want you to manipulate their search engine - which makes sense. On the other hand, it's hard to know (if not impossible), which links were paid. Does anyone know more about this?

In my opinion, you should never buy backlinks because exactly we don't know that if those backlinks are useful or not. Backlink plays a major role in getting traffic to your website. As a new comer, it will be very hard to build quality backlinks and one that will help you getting traffic. You should do backlink in those sites whose page rank is quite high. That will be useful and better for your website. Sometimes buying backlinks are against Google's terms and conditions. So, generate your own backlinks.
