Basically we can learn lot of thing from competitor website such as what keywords they are using, what pushes them on first position, how they are maintaining their business, what are their business strategies and where they are creating backlinks? These are common things that we should analyze through our competitor.

Make sure that for which keyword your competitor is receiving more traffic and regularly analyze what kind of changes is making in the website.

Nice post from responders, you can always outrank your competitors if you know their major keyword. SEM Rush can do that for you.

Perform a search with Google about your target keywords and make a list of the sites/companies that pop high in the search results. You can consider these to be your main competitors.

"ahref" can be proved as a good site to analyze about competitors website, their growth and lacking points too. Analyzing competitor's site is very beneficial to set good stratagies for own website.
