How important is CAPTCHA?

I keep on seeing CAPTCHA or re-CAPTCHA each time I will "log-in" or just clicking a tab. Does it protect a webpage? Should I need to use this whenever I create my own site? Can you show me what are the importance in providing this?

When used on login pages, it helps to keep out brute force password scripts. When used on join forms, it helps to keep out bots.

Without it your blog will get spam registrations using false emails (other people's) who then complain that your site is spamming them! RESULT = blacklisted!
