Update URLs: If the broken link is pointing to a page that has moved, update the link with the correct URL.
Remove or Replace: If the linked page no longer exists, consider removing the link or replacing it with a relevant one.
Redirects: If a page has permanently moved, set up 301 redirects from the old URL to the new one.

Internal Links

301 redirect:
If the target page has moved, use a 301 redirect to point the old link to the new page.

Update the link: If the URL was misspelled, fix it to point to the correct page.

Remove the link: If the page no longer exists, remove the link entirely.

External Links

Check validity:
Verify if the external website still exists. If not, remove or replace the link.

Replace with relevant link: If the external content is outdated or irrelevant, find a new and appropriate link to replace it.

Remove the link: If the link no longer adds value, remove it entirely.

How to fix broken links in website?
It all depends on the approach you want to take. In SEO, it's common to use a 301 redirect from a 404 page to a page with similar content to avoid losing the ranking of that page on search engines. To do this, you can rely on some WordPress plugins that allow for redirects; an example is RankMath, but there are many other valid options. Alternatively, if you don't use WordPress or other CMS that allow plugin installation, you can check if there's a URL management section in your site's control panel. There, you can specify the starting URL (currently in 404) and the destination URL (where you want to redirect). As a last resort, you could also insert this tag <META HTTP-EQUIV=Refresh CONTENT="0; URL="newpage"> into the HTML code of the page, replacing the URL with the destination page. This last solution requires more technical skills, but if you can access the HTML code of the 404 page, it shouldn't be too difficult.

Google Search Console is a free web service offered by Google that allows webmasters to monitor and troubleshoot their website's presence in Google Search results. It provides insights into how Google sees your site, identifies indexing issues, and helps optimize its visibility in search results.

- To check for crawl errors and broken links, navigate to the "Coverage" or "Index" section. Here, you'll find information about issues encountered while Googlebot crawls your site.

- Click on the specific error type (like "Errors", "Valid with warnings", etc.) to see details about URLs affected by these issues. This can include broken links (404 errors), server errors, or other crawl issues.

Fixing Issues:
Once identified, you can fix these issues directly on your website. For instance, for broken links (404 errors), you can update the links or redirect them to the correct URLs.

Please note that it might take some time for data to populate in Search Console, especially if you've just added your website or made recent changes. Additionally, it's a good practice to check the Console periodically to ensure your site remains in good standing with Google.

Hope it helps!

To fix broken links on a website:
  1. Use tools like Google Search Console, broken link checkers, or website auditing tools to identify broken links on your site.
  2. Locate the broken links in your content or navigation and update them with the correct URLs. Ensure the new links lead to valid and relevant content.
  3. If a page has permanently moved or been renamed, set up 301 redirects from the old URL to the new one. This ensures that users and search engines are directed to the correct page.

To fix broken links on a website, start by conducting a thorough link audit using tools like Google Search Console, Ahrefs, or Screaming Frog to identify broken or dead links. Once identified, update or replace broken links with valid URLs or redirect them to relevant, functioning pages. Ensure to use proper 301 redirects for permanently moved pages and update internal links as well as external backlinks if possible. Regularly monitor and maintain the website's links to prevent future broken links by using automated link checking tools and periodically reviewing website content for any changes that might affect link integrity.

I built a tool that will find broken links for you. I don't want to spam here but send me a private message and I will get you the link and an invite code for free access.

It does not only link checking, but crawls your whole website for errors. Also does on-page seo audits and rank tracking (track the ranks of your pages for your target keyword in google).
