What Traffic Quality Metrics Do You Monitor Most Closely?

When analyzing website traffic, most people focus on clicks, impressions, and conversions. However, I've found that traffic quality metrics can often reveal issues before they impact campaign performance.

Some of the metrics I pay attention to include:

Bounce rate
Average session duration
Pages per session
Geographic distribution
Device distribution
Returning visitors
Conversion rate by traffic source

I'm curious to know what metrics other webmasters and marketers consider most important when evaluating traffic quality.

Have you discovered any unusual patterns that helped you identify low-quality traffic or improve campaign performance?

Looking forward to hearing your insights.

  • We closely monitor conversion rate, bounce rate, and average session duration to measure traffic quality and user engagement.
  • We also track pages per session, returning visitors, and lead generation metrics to identify high-intent traffic sources.

You are definitely looking at the right stuff, most people don’t go this deep. I have seen bounce rate by itself can be misleading, and session flow usually gives a better idea of whether there’s an intent mismatch.
Geo and device splits also sometimes hide issues you won’t notice in overall numbers. And if returning visitors are low, it usually means the traffic isn’t very strong, even if everything else looks fine

Beyond the standard numbers, I try to look at the human psychology behind the data. I focus heavily on filtering out automated bot traffic first, since scripts can completely skew the baseline. Once the noise is gone, tracking custom events—like specific button clicks or scroll depth—gives a much clearer picture of true user intent than bounce rate alone. It tells you how people are actually experiencing your site.
