I'm not sure what the OP is trying to state here... The last part makes no sense at all - unless re-written to state that a great source of targeted traffic is to leverage the use of related social networks to your niche or something on those lines...

In sum its not a question and the association of SMO having direct influence on the SERPs is wrong with regards to rankings.

Here is a good thread which discusses/explains how social signal do not have a direct influence on search engine rankings. An indirect influence can occur when backlinks are created as a result of social media campaigns which promote a given website. But that's just relying on luck with the hope that an authoritative site will take notice and provide a backlink...

In the same way SEO does not have a direct influence on social networks i.e. only indirectly should someone find your website on the SERPs and decide to share that on their social network.

The best way to view SMO - is to regard it as a separate source of traffic which does not rely on search engines. For sure it is a good thing to adopt as it makes sense to diversify your business to not rely on a single means for traffic and resulting income. In otherwords SMO is different to SEO and should be regarded as a separate discipline...

Hiya twinkenterprises,

What is the difference between SMO and SEO?
Indeed there are big differences:

1) SMO (social media optimization) - is focused on getting traffic from social networks such as FB, Twitter, LinkedIn as well as many other social networking platforms.
2) SEO (search engine optimization) - is focused on getting traffic from search engines through use of on-page seo and off-page seo with link building etc.

Are there any ways to increase SEO by SMO?
As mentioned social signals do not have a direct influence with ranking a website on the search results. For example Google does not care about the number of FB likes, tweets etc...

The only way it will have an influence on the search results is indirectly as follows: some people may create backlinks - but that typically correlates to large amounts of social traffic which provides great value which in turn influences people to create backlinks on their own websites as a review/resource for their own readers... For example I run a large social media campaign which promotes an awesome page on my website... A visitor sees my social campaign and loves my awesome page and decides wow - I'm going to write about that on my blog which in turn has a link to my page...

Like I said - social signals ONLY have an indirect influence... Google does not use that as a ranking factor... It is best to regards social as a separate source of traffic which does not rely on the SERPs.. and is a good thing wrt diversifying your online business...

Hope that helps!

Nice post @elcidofaguy...but what are the most things do I need to "OPTIMIZE" for pages from these social networks (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn) while they are providing common forms for all users?

I am just curious about that.

Hi Harry!

I'm not sure what you mean by common forms? I think you mean that the majority of social networks operate in a similar way in that you reach out to people, groups etc and can make connections...

Suffice to say the most important thing when it comes to SMO is to focus on increasing your popularity and followers. Each social network has its specific strategies wrt SMO - but in general its about providing engaging content which is either helpful, interesting, funny etc which you share. Typically you would provide an excerpt with leaving the details on your website and hence driving traffic to it...

Some other tips:
  • Target your users emotions, pain points etc... That way you'll get them to take notice and your social campaign may even go viral.
  • Comments - encourage users to leave comments and to discuss stuff. This helps to make your social network page become more authoritative, it encourages more people to follow and interact.
  • Post regular content/updates...

Finally don't forget that for most people the aim is to drive social network traffic to our website in reciprocation we can also drive traffic from our website to our social network through obvious links and share buttons which can help increase our social network followers.

I hope that helps!

Cheers,

Sid
