I would like to register a .CO domain for some niche blogs but wondering I can get high rankings with it name on search engines? Does domain extension affect SEO rankings?
Your help would be appreciated.

I thought that .com, .net, and .org were the top-level domains used for our purposes, so I looked it up (since they've got new ones coming out all the time), and I was right. :p If I were you, I'd stick to one of those. There's another reason. You know how everyone is so used to the .com extension? I heard a story not too long ago that got a .co domain name instead of a .com because he thought it was cool. The problem was that website visitors thought his url was a .com one, and that he just messed up (lots of people don't know .co even exist). He ended up having to buy the .com one and and set up a redirect. He had to spend twice the money to get the thing he should of gotten in the first place.

For ranking purposes, it really does not matter. I'm killing it in one niche with a .xyz domain right now.

The one exception would be TLD's that have geographic significance. For example. .co.uk is going to be tougher to rank in the U.S.

For branding, and especially if it is something that I am expecting return traffic, I would never use a .co if I did not also own the .com. You will have people that type in .com out of habit and they will end up on another site.

For SEO though, it won't matter.

It does not matter, as long as you do a good job, you can be in top with any domain extension.

Yes, you can get high rankings with a .co domain. Your content and website itself will determine the rankings.

The .co domains will get a slightly higher ranking in Columbia, since that's their extension, but elsewhere it can still get high rankings. That all depends on what you do with your site and what you put on it.

Yes you can get high authority but here is the issue I have with it. What most people seem to not realize is that .co is a TLD for Columbia so Google will have a hard time ranking it high for a American website for example.

That would be like using a .ca domain (canada) for an American business, its just not smart.

I also personally dont like the .co domains because its soooo easy to have customers confuse it with .com....

Imagine you run a radio ad for example and say come to jimmy.co I guarantee you that 50% or more of the people will hear jimmy.com

overall I do not recommend it based on my professional gut feeling :)
