Which one is correct? I just use both not really thinking.

/> is for a 'self closing' tag.

I.e. <br /> <hr />

Tags that do not have content in-between can be self closing.
Tags that have content in between, do not close this way.
I.a <div> your content </div> <a href=''>link text</a>
