What is the best way to solve 404 errors in Google webmaster tool? can I use a redirection to homepage instead? What alternatives to 301 redirects that still good for SEO?

If your 404 errors pages have the backlinks and ranking then you can use the 301 redirect solution.
Otherwise, you don't need to redirect 404 error.

And you can also use .htaccess configuration file to proper redirection.

If you want to move a page permanentely, I would suggest using 301 to re-direct the traffic to the new page or a similar page rather than homepage.

eg : if you want to redirect example.com/wordpress-setup/ to example.com/wordpress-basics/ (if you have a similar page). You can do this from .htaccess.
