Should each department in my company have its own social media initiatives?

Depends on the type of company. The question you need to ask is.... Will a department benefit form social media?

I don't think so, but they need to be synchronized. What do you think?
Yeah. Every department, every section, every sub section should need to have online presence on social media because your every section or sub section have the business for this world. SO you can not avoid them presence on online.

Thanks

It is fully possible to represent each department of a functional business from the same social media account. Unless, of course, it is fully necessary to represent different aspects of the business within two separate environments (e.g. customer service/promotional content), then I would argue that having everything under a single account/handle is only going to make it easier for your customers to find and communicate with you. Dissecting a companywide social media iniative is primarily going to serve to make things more convoluted than is necessary.
