Working use of Photoshop and Illustrator

Hey

How long have you been using Photoshop and Illustrator?

I wanted to know the basics, which we should know before using photoshop and illustrator together.

Again, what is the working use of both, when used together?

Can older version work for me as well?

Illustrator, for drawing from scratch.
Photoshop, for editing.

I have been using Photoshop & Illustrator actively since 2006. To learn the basics of both programs I would suggest YouTube videos for guidance, just playing around in the programs themselves or checking out Lynda.com, which has some great instructional videos. Here's a quick tip though: if you use a new version of illustrator or photoshop to create a document - you cannot open that file in an older version.
