Autocad versus Solidworks? Which one is better for creating complex design?

Some said that Autocad is built for 2d design while Solidworks is designed for 3d. Is this true for creating complex design shapes?.

Your question is too broad. It depends on what you want to design, what industry you are designing for, etc.

If you want to design automotive products the best product would be CATIA. If you want to make realistic looking mockups you should look at ALIAS. What do you mean by "complex design shapes"?
