Backlinks, which are sometimes called inbound links, are incoming links to a web page or the entire website. These inbound links are important to search engine. The more backlinks a website has, the more popular it is, and the more pertinent the information is considered by search engine algorithms.

For eg: If I link my website in this post, this will become a backlink for our website.

backlinks could be internal too, not always from external. I am not an expert, but I read that somewhere on the net

A site could link to you using the text "Keyword 1." You are more likely to rank higher for that keyword if many sites link to you using that text.

A backlink is, simply put, a link from another website to yours. Backlinks can also be called hyperlinks, incoming links, inbound links, or just links—they all mean the same thing.

A “backlink” is created when an external website links to yours. This why some people refer to them as “external backlinks” or “inbound links”.

Here’s how it looks in action:

What-Are-Backlinks.jpg

These links are a large piece of the ranking puzzle.

But before we get into the heavy link building strategy…

You need to make sure that your site is ready for backlinks.

Why Do You Need Backlinks?

SEO Ranking. Backlinks are "votes" from one side to yours. If relevant and authority websites link back to you, it shows Google that you are worth it. Perhaps, you are an authority too, thus resulting in higher SERPs ranking.

Referral Traffic. When you get a link in a prominent position from a well-known site, it is highly likely that a certain percentage of their visitors will get referred back to your site. So, even if a link does not send link juice back to you, don't fret. They might send REAL visitors instead.

What Kind of Backlinks Are Good for You?

Relevant. With the latest Google updates, you can pretty much be assured that non-relevant, spammy backlinks are a surefire way to your site's downfall. Instead, you need to get backlinks from websites in your NICHE.

Authority. With the E.A.T. theory been going around these days, every site is supposed to be an authority website even if it is on "how to clip nails of your fat Asian cat". When an authority website links back to you, Google knows you are somewhat of authority too.

Do-follow. Although no-follow links are not to be discounted totally and even if they don't pass link juice, they can send ranking signals to Google and are taken into account when ranking one page higher than the other, you should always aim to procure do-follow links. A mixture of 70 percent do-follow and 30 percent no-follow is probably the most ideal link profile.

High-Traffic. You would want to get links from high-traffic websites most of the time. If not for SEO purposes, high-traffic websites have the potential to make your site receive thousands of visitors in just 24 hours! (Tricky but definitely possible.)

So, that's 'bout it.
