Why is organic reach on social media getting lower?

I’ve noticed that organic reach on many social media platforms seems to be getting lower over the years. Even pages with decent followers sometimes struggle to reach their audience without boosting posts.

Some possible reasons might be:
  • algorithm changes prioritizing paid content
  • too much competition and content saturation
  • platforms favoring video formats like Reels or Shorts
Do you think organic reach is still worth focusing on, or is social media becoming mostly pay-to-play now?

Curious to hear what strategies others are using to maintain reach and engagement.

Yes, organic reach has declined on platforms like Instagram and LinkedIn compared to several years ago. Many posts no longer reach a large share of followers unless they trigger strong engagement signals early on. Short‑form video and interactive posts such as questions, carousels, and polls tend to perform better organically because platforms actively push those formats to keep users engaged. You can still get awareness and engagement from organic posts if the content is useful or entertaining, but depending only on organic usually leads to slower growth for most businesses.

This is really easy to understand. Now the world is a little tired or read big articles and they prefer short videos, short texts, short description and blog stuff.
Social Media knows that and that is why they are so strict right now, they even have their own AI, do you think people will move or open your website looking for an answer right now with IA implemented?

It will always have some traffic, but will decrease. Unfortunately.

I’ve observed that organic reach on most social media platforms has been declining over time. Even pages with a solid follower base often find it difficult to reach their audience without promoting or boosting posts.

Organic reach on social media is dropping mainly because platforms are prioritizing revenue, competition, and user experience.

1. Algorithm changes
Platforms like Facebook and Instagram now favor content that drives engagement (likes, comments, shares). If your content doesn’t perform quickly, it gets shown to fewer people.

2. Increased competition
There’s far more content being posted today than before. With limited feed space, only highly engaging or relevant posts get visibility.

3. Paid promotion priority
Social platforms are businesses. They intentionally reduce organic reach to encourage brands to spend on ads.

4. Shift to video content
Short-form videos (Reels, Shorts) are prioritized. Static posts or low-quality content often get less reach.

5. User behavior changes
People scroll faster and engage less, which signals algorithms to limit reach on average posts.

6. Content saturation
Audiences are overloaded, so platforms filter content more aggressively to show only what users are most likely to interact with.

Bottom line:
To improve reach, focus on high-quality, engaging, and platform-specific content—especially video, storytelling, and consistency.

Organic reach on social media is declining mainly because platforms prioritize paid content and algorithm-driven feeds, meaning posts now compete with ads and highly engaging content, so only the most relevant or interactive posts get shown to a wider audience.
