Why is organic reach on social media getting lower?

I’ve noticed that organic reach on many social media platforms seems to be getting lower over the years. Even pages with decent followers sometimes struggle to reach their audience without boosting posts.

Some possible reasons might be:
  • algorithm changes prioritizing paid content
  • too much competition and content saturation
  • platforms favoring video formats like Reels or Shorts
Do you think organic reach is still worth focusing on, or is social media becoming mostly pay-to-play now?

Curious to hear what strategies others are using to maintain reach and engagement.

Yes, organic reach has declined on platforms like Instagram and LinkedIn compared to several years ago. Many posts no longer reach a large share of followers unless they trigger strong engagement signals early on. Short‑form video and interactive posts such as questions, carousels, and polls tend to perform better organically because platforms actively push those formats to keep users engaged. You can still get awareness and engagement from organic posts if the content is useful or entertaining, but depending only on organic usually leads to slower growth for most businesses.
