I'd like to know about traffic from Yahoo search, my friend told me that he got more traffic with yahoo search (although he didn't get good rankings with google) is it true?
his site has got keywords on first page of Yahoo search. that's reason why he got clicks from yeahoo search.

what do you think about that? we should focus on ranking with Yahoo search?
Any shares?

Yahoo has gotten less share market than Google but if your friend is getting more traffic from it then it would be very difficult to convert them.

Yes it also happened to me as well. In google my rank is 280 but in Yahoo my rank is 3.
Google often changed its algorithms for its quality. But yahoo and bing still considering about some old strategies that were taken out from Google like meta keywords. If URL, Title and Meta description have the same query as by searched then it might get chance to rank top in Yahoo and Bing. But it is not come by naturally. You have to some good SEO for it.

I read awhile back that actual placement in Google affected Yahoo and Bing placement. The Yahoo and Bing search engines actually considered where your site was placed in Google. There was a lot of controversy surrounding this practice, and I am not well informed on the subject now.

I would like to see a greater amount of traffic from both Yahoo and Bing, but my main source of traffic flows from Google.

I don't see this happened with my sites, it is getting good rankings on Google but not for Bing or Yahoo search. I am learning to figure out what are the differences between SEO for Bing and Google.

Of course is main traffic source always is google but if we can get high rankings on Bing and Yahoo, they could bring more traffic to sites for free.

I'm with you, and if you discover the magic mix please do share! :icon_mrgreen:

I have no idea why my site has first page ranking for my desired keyword on Google, but hardly any flow of Traffic from Yahoo and Bing. I mean I only receive a few hundred visitors from both Yahoo and Bing combined, and then several thousand from Google search.

Google is a search Giant and most of the webmasters getting majority of traffic coming from Google search. I am not saying that Yahoo is useless, But if you comparison these two companies in search market than Google obviously dominating the search market.

Of course Google dominates the market, but you can't leave anything on the table for your competition. If you ignore Yahoo, you lose a percentage of possible conversions.

I get very less traffic from yahoo so I stop checking my site in yahoo rank because of Yahoo is going down day by day. Recently they make a deal with google to increase users because of decline in Users/visitors.

I think soon it will be dead. Sorry to yahoo lovers but this is truth.

Better to focus on Bing and Google ;)

As of right now they are just shutting down some of it's components/aspects but Yahoo itself is not shutting down. Verizon (they bought Yahoo) will probably make some big changes with it though.

If the sale goes through, the CEO and 5 or 6 other board members are resigning. Yahoo is going to be renamed Altaba.

Other than that, probably won't see a whole lot different for awhile.

They can't just go around making wholesale changes to their search algorithm. Plus I think most of their search results are supplied from Bing and Google still.

Read about the name change the other day, the new name makes NO sense to me wonder if it's going to "stick" well. Seems odd. But maybe that is just me.

Doesn't seem like they are getting results from G. Ranked for crap in G but great in Yahoo and Bing. Maybe depends on the keywords/phrases.

Wow, were the heck did they come up with that name? Was that they only .com they could find? ;)

I think that they are stupid for throwing away the Yahoo name that is one of the most well known names on the web. I understand that they want to make changes but I that one will hurt them.

If I was a board member and heard that they were switching to that name i'd want to resign too. ;)

Ya really it's like... "Hey lets get a domain that starts with A. Nope thats porn Nope that porn. Oh Heck Eeny meeny miny mo. And we have a winner."

Just makes NO sense. Don't see how it's related to Verizon or Yahoo. Or has ANYTHING to do with either one.

Oh wait.. from the Washington post:

The new name is meant to be a combination of the words “alternative and Alibaba,” according to a person familiar with the company’s thinking, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the individual was not authorized to speak on the record about the name change.

Today Yahoo owns roughly 15 percent of Alibaba, holdings that are worth about $35 billion. The idea behind the name is that Altaba’s stock can now be tracked as an alternative to Alibaba because Yahoo owns a sizable chunk of the Chinese company.

Really? Just so the stock can be tracked? Seriously? What idiot thought that was a good idea? Sorry for the language, that "seems" to be incredibly stupid. Gee, stock that won't be worth nothing because the most important aspect, the end users who are the ones that drive the revenue.

You are so right, throwing away Yahoo could be one of the biggest mistakes ever made on the net. Worst than the big tech bubble when the net was ramping up.

Seems only the current board members are the smart ones at the big kids table.

Well any one thinking yahoo is going down fast, wait until they change the name (if they do) talk about a big flop failing faster.

As fast as the stock. Dumb name and board members resigning don't see that building much confidence for investors.

Or I just don't understand or there are some insider secrets :)

I guess I don't know much about big sites. I would have thought it would be better to rebuild a reconognized brand name than start from scratch.

Or..... some one needs a REAL big write off :)

I hadn't seen that name till SEOPub posted it so it was a real shocker. It doesn't matter what they were thinking when coming up with that name, it just looks dumb! Unless you spent a lot of time eating paint chips when you were growing up, it's really looking screwy.

They could have came up with a better name than that by just eating alphabet soup, puking it up and using whatever letters they could make out from that mess of volmit. ;)

Maybe it's really Google that bought Yahoo but through Verizon and using that dumb name is their way of driving the final nail into the Yahoo coffin! ;)

ya really :) LOL

It is kind of sad though. I remember when Yahoo was the big boy. Remember getting listed in their directory and getting lots of quality traffic. Sad because it's such a big site, bet it could be good again if they had a team that knew what they were doing. Seems them have a base just need to fix some things like email for starters. Such a waste. Hey they made it longer than Altavista, Excite, infoseek or hotbot ect, ect.

It's like doom and gloom now no matter what they do.

Evil G is at it again. So schneaky :)

Oh Yeah. Back in the 90's Yahoo was it! I used to spend some time on there when I was using my AOL internet service. ;)

By what they are planning to do they are sure making it look like they are trying to kill Yahoo off. I think that if you are going to invest those big bucks then go ahead and try to fix what's wrong with it and not try to build something else out of it. They could have got some other site that is worthless and do their Alibaba thing with it for WAY cheaper...

Well Bing has changed its name 3 times and look how great they are doing... </sarcasm>

I'm on board with ditching the Yahoo name. Yes, it is big and well known, but it's not working anymore. If they are going to get back to anything close to what they used to be, I think they need to make a clean break. I'm not saying the new name is good or bad, but it is time for a change instead of just continuing to limp along as Yahoo.

They'll still own the name, so they could always bring it back in the future.

If anything, down the road once their current agreements with Bing and Google are over for search advertising, I would consider bringing back Yahoo as just the search engine side of things. Separate it out from all the Yahoo News and other sides of the business. Make it just a blank page with a search bar like Google.com.

Getting higher rankings in Yahoo than you have in Google happens quite often. Both these search engines use different algorithms and factors that they use to determine the rankings in their search results pages.

I have had websites that ranked higher in Yahoo than they did in Google. I really don't know exactly why but it does happen.

Yes, This happens since both search engine uses different algorithms for ranking. Bing still uses some older algorithms for ranking and Google keeps changing its algorithms regularly. But Bing's share is very less since majority of the user prefer google so it always good practice to try ranking on google.

Yahoo and Google have different methods of indexing sites.
If you are not on page one for Google Search, there is no point. If you can come up on page one for Yahoo or Bing, it is a very good thing. They are still driving traffic to your website, that you want. It aint coming from Google.

This traffic may/does not come from direct yahoo visitors, but comes from various different sources.
Eg-
- default browser search engine for some linux OS/browser toolbars/publisher site search pages
- traffic from publishers, who don't have paying advertisers for that keyword goes to search page

I have not come across any link which tells how to optimize for Yahoo/Bing search engines. If anyone does, please share.
