I see some hosts offer DDoS protection automatically. What level protection is this usually in GBs?

If you host doesn't offer it or you want more protect n, what are the options?

This really depends on the web hosting provider, I recommend contacting them directly. For example, all of our Shared/Reseller Hosting servers are protected for 160Gbps attacks, while we offer our Dedicated Server customers 10Gbps protection. 10Gbps for a Dedicated Server is plenty for most, when you start getting higher attacks than that then you should really ask yourself what you are doing to provoke someone into launching such an attack on your server.

Like I said, ask the provider you may be interested in going with, as they will be able to provide you with more detailed information.

I don't think VPS's are any more prone to DDoS attacks than other hosts. A lot of it depends on what content you are hosting.

Political activists sites, Adult content, Gaming (especially game servers), etc will often see a higher volume of attacks.

To know for sure, you would have to ask your host directly. Most hosts that include this for free, have protection in the 10-50GB/s range. This will stop a small attack, but it should not be considered protection against all DDoS attacks. These days we are seeing attacks in the +500GB/s range!

You also need to look at what layer of protection they offer. If you have 20GB/s of DDoS protection, that is only Layer 3,4 Network protection, and you get hit with a 5GB/s Layer 7 application DDoS attack, you will still get knocked offline and probably Null routed.

If you want additional protection, there are lots of other 3rd party providers you can use. Cloudflare has free and paid plans for varying levels of protection. You can also look at Incapsula, F5, Black Lotus, Akamai, etc.

Some offer protection on a per site basis by using their name servers. If you need to protect a network, you will need to use BGP tunneling which oftentimes requires your own IP block of /24 or larger.
