Keyword planners is only useful for amount of searches. The competition is for advertising.

Manually searching keywords in Google and checking front page comp is the only way to accurately find keywords.

Actually there is a way to do this with a tool.
You can set up an exel sheet and export your keywords with the number of searches and number of search results. Divide search results by number of searches and you will have a number that indicates how good the keyword is pick the lowest number and your onto a winner.

Number of search results has NOTHING to do with how competitive a keyword is. I really hate when people keep bringing this ridiculous myth up again and again.

You have 3 competitors no matter what your keyword is. It does not matter how many listings there are. You need to be able to beat number 3.

Its not a myth it's just the way you are looking at it. Sorry but a good rule is if there are 9 million results the person at number one has beaten 9 million. If however there are just 10 then the person at the top has only beaten 9 which means it is alot more likely you can beat number 1.

That is such horrible thinking. IT IS A MYTH. No matter what your keyword is, you only have 3 competitors. That is it. If you cannot outrank any of the sites in the top 3, it doesn't matter if there are 9 million other sites or 9 other sites.

A good analogy is to think of a race in which you want to win a medal. The top 3 racers earn medals. You need to be faster than the 3rd fastest runner in the race. It does not matter if there are 10 people in the race or 10,000 people in the race. If you can beat the 3rd fastest runner, the result is the same.

Do you think the top runners in the Boston Marathon care about how many racers there are in the race? It grows every year. Does that make them think it is going to be more difficult to win? No. They are just looking at the top racers. That is who they are focused on beating.

If you can beat the website ranked #3, the site ranked #423,762 does not matter.

Also the number of results that Google returns does not mean there are that many webpages targeting that phrase.

If I search for [URLnf="https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=big%20pink%20elephants%20with%20tiny%20purple%20balls"]big pink elephants with tiny purple balls[/URLnf], Google returns 1.35 million results. Do you really think there are over 1 million webpages trying to rank for that phrase or anything related to it?

Crazy myths like this that keep getting regurgitated over and over again are one of the many reasons why so many people fail online.

Adwords is a good source for keywords, also check high traffic websites in your niche using SemRush (you can apply for a 30 day trial). Amazon & Flippa are also good sources to find keywords.

I also recommend Google search (without hitting enter) and typing different keywords, noting down different suggestions Google will offer you then use a keyword research tool to analyze the keywords.

You can also check popular blog posts in different high traffic blogs to find good keywords and also check forums to see which questions are frequently asked.

Hope that helps someone :)

Try to research for the most relevant keyword that your potential target market use. Remember once you search for the right term do ensure that it is relevant to your website content. Aside from google adword you can also try google trend, microsoft bing ads, wordtrackers, etc.

One must choose longtail keyword for articles. Keywords must meet three given below factors:

1. High Searches
2. Low Competition
3. Good CPC

There are various ways to find good keyterms to use for blog posts, obviously Google keyword tool is one, but I also use the suggestions that come up at the bottom of the search, which are related searches. These often don't show up in the keyword tool but are usually good long tail options.

Brain is best keyword suggestion checker. I use my brain to find some keyword and then use SEO tools to check competition keyword.

Google is also good place, search in google like webmaster forum and at the end of page you will see 5 to 10 keywords related to webmaster forum.
