Unless the article is manually spun at a sentence structure level, which takes as long as rewriting the entire article, Google probably knows. If consumer products can determine whether an article is unique or not, imagine what the geniuses at Google have cooked up.

Remember, Google are the company that created magnificent innovations such as Google Earth, Google Maps with Street View, Google Search and Google Glass. Do you think they can create a software solution to check if your article was spun?

Since Google won't say exactly how they detect it, it's all speculation as to how they know if an article is a spun article or not.

There are sites like copyscape mentioned above that use software to detect plagiarism, which would be a way to detect a spun article. If there's a very high percentage of the exact same article somewhere else on another website then they can be pretty certain that it's not the original.

You can do a rewrite of an article and use your own words, but that's basically the same thing as writing an article anyway. The only thing that rewriting and article can sometimes save time on is the research needed (if any) for the article.
