Most optimal location to place affiliates

I've been to some sites where they exchange Affiliate images that are to be placed on ones website/forum. I own a forum and I'm wondering if there is a optimal place to put them? Most people I've seen place them in the footer, either in the form of a link or a small image.

According to my personal opinion then best places are on top header of forums/sites where everyone can easily see them, forum layouts, thread content or on right sidebar (if your forum has a sidebar) also are optimal location to place exchanges.
