A VPS hosting is a good choice for a eCommerce site. Because these type of sites needs lot of space and bandwidth and other resources which you will not get in a shared hosting.

I'm sorry but I must say this is poor advice.

On a VPS, you have the added expense of the control panel and server management (unless the OP is proficient in setting up, managing, and securing a server via Linux command line).
You also will typically get more resources on a high quality shared hoating account then you will on a same priced VPS.

Your adding cost and the work required.

If there is not a NEED for root access or higher resources then a business class shared account allows, the blanket recommendation for the average user to use a VPS is a bad recomendation. Period.

Vishwa, can you tell us more about what your doing?
Is this a new or establish website?
How much traffic are you currently receiving?
Are you going to process or store credit card info directly on your site, or use a 3rd part processor?
What is your target budget?

I think it also depend on your ecommerce project, if it's new website and have no traffic then shared hosting is enough, however if this is a established website with thousands of traffic and users then you need a higher hosting power such as VPS or even Dedicated server. In almost cases you always need skills to control and manage the hosting. The price now between shared hosting and Vps is same same, the price for dedicated server is much higher and you need more budget and also skills to manage.

I would try a different approach: base your choice on the platform you use. Check the official recommendations of the software vendor. You can find official recommendations on almost every website, like

Wordpress
Magento
X-Cart

Why to do so? Well in this case you will be 100% sure that the hosting is absolutely compatible and well-tuned to get the most of your ecommerce software. Also, if they "misbehave", you can complain to the vendor and probably even have they excluded from the list, hence you have some "extra protection" =)

BTW, from our experience, VPS is the best choice for a production mode of online store from several points of view, first of all it's way more secure and fast (if properly configured, of course), compared to cheap shared hosting. Speed does matter, it contributes to both customer experience and SEO.
