Can you tell me about affiliate marketing?

You know, i have been here for ages. By here, I mean online world, but I am yet to know in details of what is affiliate marketing. people are making thousands every month even today with minimal investment out of this area and am just sitting there . I have an idea about it, but dunno how to be a success, as if I wanna go in, I would wish to make each penny count in the current market .
