How to tell if somebody else is doing black-hat SEO to my website?

It is pretty obvious why other people do black-hat to competitors, but I do not know how exactly Google can punish the website, except making you lose your positions. Can I somehow defend my sites and projects from this unpleasant menace?

I use Ahrefs to track all backlinks to my site. so when I see any suspicious backlinks from black hat sites, I would be noticed.

Basically people do is create huge bad backlinks. So, check your link profile.
