Why https sites are slow to load?

HTTPS pages are a little slower than HTTP because of the time taken to do the SSL handshake (authentication) and encrypt your data before sending it. However, as most people have mentioned, the difference shouldn't be more than a few milliseconds, hardly noticeable.

However, we had faced a similar issue sometime back whereby https pages were taking a really long time to load. This was because we hadn't setup caching properly, and it was slowing things down. It started working well once we disabled caching.

Yes due to https more caching introduce and also redirections also make slow. For that solution is you need to use Cloudflare DNS it will remove caching after some interval of time and also your domain is secure

1) Those who reckon https is slower then http, please provide screenshots.
If you are using Google Chrome , Ctrl + Shift + I or use menu to go Developer tools. Choose Network tab in DevTools.

Clear Cache(saved images) and browser with http, and then clear cache and again browser with https. It is better to not use any proxy in between like CloudFlare.

Perform the test couple of times.

2) If you find a significant difference, checkup with Hosting Provider.
Using Cloudflare, to run as SSLProxy, with backend http to hosting server, can also help. Your decision.

3) You have to use HTTPS for your website. So, look for solution that optimizes https.

SSL certificate will hardly affect speed of the website loading. In rare case, if there are 2 certificates, there may be a clash with Handshake protocol. Do check this.
Also, I would suggest you to optimize the websites as some elements would slow down your website.

It shouldn't make any difference if you add SSL certificate to website. If you have any problem for load time, kindly check it with your web host.

SSL handshake will cause a slight delay for website to load. How much delay have you recorded for the website to load? What tool are you using to check the speed?

It is impossible for the SSL certificate to be at fault.
Most likely webmasters save resources and use webhosting while their site has huge traffic.
