I recommend you to go for a hosting that offer basic SSL free with their hosting plan. I recently purchased A2 hosting and they are offering same service along with excellent speed and service. I believe this will serve purpose for a blog. If your current hosting provider is not offering SSL then don't worry. for a blog, it does not matter much

2) SSL SPDY improves performance by piggybacking requests. Though, I am not sure of browser support.

3) I have not stumbled upon any issues, by moving to SSL. Please correct me with appropriate stats.

In my opinion, all websites should use SSL certificates to ensure a higher level of security. This way, your site will look more trustworthy, which is a good thing. If you are handling your client's data or any sensitive data, then definitely you should change into https. Whereas Http is not recommending for any sites because Google prefers https and made them a ranking factor. The Http communication always with the plain text and https is encrypted one. there is so many website that are still available with Http. The data breach for these sites is also will be high. It is not meant that you never will hack if you apply https. It is the first level of security, and security always is number of layers. So the real thing is what type of website is handling by you and what types of data stores.
