Look nothing is outdated. Everything is works great. The difference is the way we do it. Google is very smart search engines and they updates their search engine algorithm frequently to monitor spammers. So, just do the SEO in way that it will not looks like spam.

Only one thing is important. Get relevant backlinks from relevant authority sites. It's really that simple.

The only thing I can add to that is do it consistently. The old join a forum as your sig to your profile really doesn't cut it and it doesn't build relationships. You may as well do both.

Backlinks from profiles on forums/sites are very weak and I don't think it helps SEO though.

if you are not commenting, exchanging, or ignoring social media how you can get back links?
Point is where you are commenting? and how you are putting your links there.
Google don't like spamming.
