I was wondering if someone could clarify the benefits of link exchanges? I was told that link exchanges do not yield any benefits since you are linking to a website that simply links back to you, which has a net zero effect. What am I missing?

link back and link exchange is both different things when you do do link exchange you usually give links from your site and take a different link back from another site and it helps in ranking.
