ICANN is short for The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. It's a non-profit organization. Not all the domain registrar can be acredited by ICANN. For example, Eranet.com is one of the ICANN domain name registrar. and you can register .com/.net./.org and so on. ICANN accreditation means the registrar is reliable.
