Hi everyone,

I'm looking for advice on web hosting for a small personal project. The idea would be to have something reliable and easy to manage to showcase my work, possibly with some statistics or dynamic content. I'm wondering if shared hosting is sufficient or if a VPS would be more suitable for a little more control and performance. Have any of you set up this kind of page with cPanel or Plesk? Even though it's not a very complex site, I'd like it to be easy to maintain and fast for visitors.

Thanks in advance for your feedback!

For a small project like that, shared hosting with cPanel should be totally fine — cheap, easy to manage, and fast enough for a portfolio site. I’d only bother with a VPS if you really want custom server tweaks or expect traffic spikes. Otherwise, start simple and upgrade later if you outgrow it.

Yeah, that makes sense. For a small personal project or portfolio, shared hosting with cPanel should be more than enough. it’s cheap, simple to manage, and fast for the kind of traffic you’ll probably get. A VPS only really makes sense if you need specific server configurations or expect bigger traffic spikes.

Hi Mason, I would advise against "shared hosting" for a small personal web project, unless you want to dev & run code that needs to be executed server-side.
You got plenty of tools today (look for staticgen or ssg) that can help you pre-render your website without having your end-users to render it again and again, and this will not only be much cheaper, it will also be much safer this way (as there's no code to run server-side) "and" better performing as you can also deploy this kind of content over CDNs. So contrary to some standard shared hosting you don't depend on your "neighbor" consumption, and the initial code is only ran once (once you author it).
