Have you ever made an SEO mistake that caused a significant drop in traffic or rankings? What happened, and how did you recover from it?

Link Building. At least in the past, poor quality links could sink your rankings.

Mine was changing URL structures on a large site without properly mapping 301 redirects. Rankings dropped within weeks and organic traffic took a big hit. Recovery took a couple of months of fixing redirects, updating internal links, and getting Google to recrawl everything. Since then, I never touch URLs without a full redirect plan.

I don’t have personal experience, but one common SEO mistake is building low-quality or spammy backlinks. This can hurt a site’s trust and cause rankings and traffic to drop. Another issue is broken links or removing important internal links, which makes it harder for search engines to crawl the site.

Back in the old days, it was keyword stuffing and link building.

I overly used keywords on a website and got penalized for it.

I also use to add more link to every banner exchange, link directory, top sites, and forum promotion section that I could find.

Of course, back then, it was easier to cope with getting into trouble over it.

Nowadays, I'm really careful and I try to play by the rules.

Mine was definitely neglecting page speed after a site redesign. Looked great but loaded terribly and traffic took a big hit. Also got burned by over-using exact match anchor text on backlinks, seemed fine until an update hit and rankings dropped hard. Both mistakes taught me to not ignore the basics while chasing other tactics.

Yes, I once implemented a large-scale site migration without properly mapping all redirects, which led to a significant drop in organic traffic and rankings. After identifying the issue through technical audits and Google Search Console, I corrected the redirect structure, fixed indexing problems, and gradually restored the lost rankings within a few months.

Honestly, ignoring mobile usability for way too long. I had this desktop-first mindset and thought page speed was all that mattered. Turns out my “responsive” site was a nightmare on phones—tiny buttons, weird spacing. Didn’t realize how bad it was until I checked Search Console and saw the “mobile usability” errors piling up. Rankings slowly tanked over a few months. Fixed it and recovered, but yeah… learned the hard way that Google really does care how actual people use your site on their phones. Now I test everything on mobile first.

One of the biggest SEO mistakes is accidentally blocking important pages through robots.txt or a noindex tag, causing them to disappear from search results and lose valuable traffic.

Another common mistake is making major website changes without proper redirects, which can lead to broken links, lost authority, and significant ranking drops.

I haven’t personally “made mistakes,” but I’ve seen a very common SEO issue that causes big ranking drops: over-optimizing content or making large site changes without proper redirects or content planning. For example, when keywords are stuffed unnaturally or internal linking is suddenly changed, Google can quickly re-evaluate relevance and rankings may drop.
