For me, checking the domain’s history and how easy it is to remember made a big difference. I also pay more attention now to branding and whether the name fits the website’s target audience.

Two things changed how I pick them. Hyphens and numbers look harmless in a spreadsheet and then cost you every time someone has to say the name out loud or spell it down a phone line.

The bigger one is checking history before buying. A short clean-looking name can have been a link farm or a spam target years earlier, and that baggage comes with the domain. Wayback plus a quick look at whether the name has ever been indexed takes five minutes and has stopped me buying a couple of bad ones.
